Overview.

The University of Nebraska maintains a University-wide Microsoft Campus Agreement,
Effective Date: 20-OCT-2006, Expected Effective End Date 30-OCT-2009.

This agreement brings the following benefits to the University:

  • All existing University computers are covered for any licensed software as well as the ability to upgrade at little or no additional cost.
  • Software tracking is greatly simplified.  Departments no longer need to worry about purchasing the correct number of licenses for the number of computers or track expiration dates.
  • This contract assures complete legal compliance at the lowest possible cost, and releases the University and its departments from any liability associated with unlicensed use of the covered software.  Additionally, the University will be spared the time and expense of an intensive software audit related to Microsoft products, and possible related fines.

Each Campus sets its own rules for software distribution, fee recovery, etc., thus this web page explains this program as implemented at UNL only.

Other Benefits.

Microsoft eLearning Library (MeLL).

Beginning Spring 2004, the University has access to the Microsoft eLearning Library (MeLL) as a benefit available under Microsoft's Software Assurance program.  UN Lincoln users can download this software from the ITS Training Services Web site.

MeLL is a set of interactive Web-based training modules providing end-users with self-paced training for Microsoft Windows operating systems, as well as the Microsoft Office System (specific modules are subject to availability from Microsoft). MeLL can be installed stand-alone on a Windows desktop, or on a Web server running Microsoft's Internet Information Services (IIS). Departments that choose to deploy MeLL via a Web server must take steps to insure that access to the software is restricted to University owned computers.

Software Fee.

UNL assesses a fee on the purchase of a New System to cover the annual cost of this contract.  The fee is set each year in August.  The fee equals $130 for Windows machines, and $40 for Macintosh computers (Users with dual boot Mac computers can install Windows XP/Vista and Office on the PC side of the computer).

Definition of a New System for the purposes of the Microsoft Campus Agreement:

  1. Any new Windows or Macintosh desktop or laptop computer system.
  2. Any Motherboard, regardless of whether it’s for the purpose of “upgrading” or building systems from scratch.  We realize there are times when a Motherboard needs to be replaced as a repair item.  In those cases, or if you have other questions or issues please contact Tom Hansen at 472-8398.

Software Installations.

Departmental technicians may either purchase licensed CDs, or install from our servers (for more information contact the site license specialist license@unl.edu).

Important Note:
Any attempt to install from other sources (e.g. retail CDs) will limit the number of installs, and/or require the use of product activation technology that we DO NOT possess.   Consequently, only install from our CDs/server, or face possible adverse consequences on your own!

Note 1:
Legally speaking our operating system (OS) licenses are only valid for upgrades.  If a computer comes with another OS (e.g. Linux), or no OS, then you cannot legally upgrade to a Windows OS.  To be legal you must first purchase a full install OS (e.g. buy cheap Windows 98 full packages on ebay.com).

However, physically speaking, most of our operating system (OS) licensed media can be used to perform either full or upgrade installs.

Note 2: 64-bit based operating systems can only be installed on 64-bit based computers.

 - Periodically publish in University-wide publications and applicable web sites the current License Agreement, or a location (either physical or on a computer network) where the License Agreement can be viewed.
